Recent large-scale breaches, coupled with insights from 1Password’s latest webinar with Troy Hunt, founder of “Have I Been Pwned?”, have further fuelled our team’s discussion about the complexity and challenges of cybersecurity, underscoring the critical importance of robust security measures in protecting our digital environments. As significant past and more recent events demonstrate, understanding and addressing these complexities has never been more crucial.

Grindr’s highly publicised 2020 data compromise is one notable example of how big platforms can still be taken down through one seemingly innocuous error. In that instance, it was found that the platform's password reset function inadvertently exposed reset tokens in the browser console logs. This meant that anyone with access to a user's email address could reset the password and gain full control of their account without needing access to the user's email. By reducing the amount of personal data collected, you not only simplify your security responsibilities but also reduce the potential impact of any data breaches. If the data isn’t collected, it can’t be compromised.
