Challenge

Bowls Australia’s Elite Performance Team needed a robust and scalable tool to track and evaluate their athletes.

Their data-capture and analysis capabilities were highly manual, relying on paper-based records and multiple spreadsheets.

They needed an all-in-one solution that could scale and evolve over time to deliver the most relevant insights for each athlete and support ongoing team development and decision-making.

User interface to capture the outcome of a single bowl. The view offers multiple options for the bowl type and hand used, and access to real-time and deeper statistics.

Solution

Grade helped plan, prioritise and then deliver a wholly unique statistic-building application.

The application needed to be flexible enough to support a variety of event and match conditions, powerful enough to gather useful performance data, and intuitive enough that anyone involved could record observations during matches.

Working through product needs and workflows, Grade created full application flows in diagram and wireframe format, then rolled these out into a well-designed interface featuring bespoke input mechanisms.

The app delivers real-time performance insights via a backend API, as well as admin views and deeper analysis through a fully-featured management interface, allowing the team to access historical data and aggregated statistics quickly and efficiently.

Results

Bowls Australia can now effectively track and analyse athlete performance, supporting training strategies, identifying development opportunities, monitoring progress, and informing team decisions.

UI to build a team of up to 4 bowlers. Here, the user has added two players to Team 1 and only one to Team 2. The UI is showing that an additional player needs to be added to Team 2.
A list view showing all upcoming, in progress and completed bowls matches. These can be filtered by various facets, or a new game can be created.
UI screen to set up a Bowls match. Allows input of a match name, date and time, conditions including green type and speed, as well as optional input of venue.
UI allowing the setting of relative positions of the mat (from which players bowl) and the jack (the target the hope to get their bowl close to). This captures data to the back end allowing filtering by overall end length.

The app you have produced for us is fantastic! We are extremely happy with the result – the ease of the process and the patience while we explained all the 'rules' of bowls was exceptional
